One was born in the palace, and thus became a prince; while the other was born to a very poor family, and thus became a pauper.

and thus became a prince = e por isso se tornou um píncipe;

while = enquanto;

the other = o outro;

The other was born to a very poor family = o outro nasceu em uma família muito pobre;
